TOPIC 5

                       


 In this topic, We learned about internet and its constituents.
Internet






Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that uses the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide.
It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business and government networks from local to a global scale that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical network technologies.

History- ARPANET (1969) to Internet(1980)

 Service on the internet
  1. Communication (Electronic mail):   It allows messages to exchanged from computer to computer. Email program are used to create, send, receive, forward, store, print and delete email. Examples: Yahoo, Gmail, etc.
  2. World Wide Web- Web created by Tim Berners Lee contain hypertext links or highlighted keywords. A collection of linked web pages that has a common theme or focus is called website. Document in the site is a webpage. It uses HTML and needs internet connection provided by ISP to access the web. A software program called web browsers are used to access the webpage. Structure of the web- web servers(computers that deliver webpages) and web client(PC)
  3. Transfer Protocol- It is a set of rules/software computers use to move files from one computer to another on the internet. Commonly used protocol is HTTP(Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
  4. Chatroom-  A medium on internet that allow people to chat with each other. Examples: Real chat, yahoo message chat room.
  5. VoIP- Voice Over Internet Protocol also known as internet telephony. Uses internet to make phone call. Examples: Skype, Yahoo voice, etc.
  6. News Group- Electronic bulletin board (conduct discussions about a specific topic) It includes newsreader like Google talk,etc.
URL ( Uniform Resource Locators )
Used to identify the exact location of the web pages.
It is a four part addressing scheme that tells the browser
- transfer protocol
- The domain name
- The pathname of  the folder
- The name of the file

These are lessons we covered in the topic of Internet. We had to learn specific new terms here therefore we had to be exact in our definitions. So, I have included most of the things I learned in class for understanding it better. Nevertheless, this topic has also been adding to my directory of knowledge. I am very much looking forward to the next topic as well.
